When it comes to paying taxes in India, Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a mandatory document to get started with. It is proof of identity and has been used for several financial activities in the world of business and personal life.

All Permanent Account Numbers provided and issued PAN cards are valid for life. Those who lose it by mistake do not have to apply for a new PAN. However, you can apply for a duplicate PAN card at the revenue department.

What is a duplicate PAN card?

Let’s see how it is done.

How to get a duplicate PAN card

It is very simple and easy to get a duplicate PAN card. The application can be lodged on the official TIN-NSDL website or if it is a paper, it should be directed to the NSDL PAN services unit. Online use of a duplicate card saves a lot of time and money. Let’s see how it can be done online:

  • Visit the TIN-NSDL and select an application type such as “Changes or modifications to existing PAN data / PAN card reprinting (No changes to existing PAN data)”. (If your PAN card is lost, lost, or stolen, you must go with your PAN card reprint without changing any information.)

Fill in the information marked as an obligation and submit it.

  • The token number will be generated and sent to your email id provided by you on the previous page. Note that token number to use in the future and proceed to complete the request.
  • Now, Fill in the required details on the “Your Information” page and select the submission form for your PAN application form. Here are 3 ways available:
  • Forward the application documents in person: The post-payment consent form must be printed with copies of the required documents and must be posted by registered post to the PAN Services department of the NSDL.
  • Post digitally by e-KYC & e-sign (Paperless): Aadhaar is required to use this option and all information provided in your aadhaar should be used separately to apply for a duplicate PAN card. OTP will be sent to the registered aadhaar number to confirm the details provided. No need to upload a photo, signature, or any other text. When you submit the final form with this option, a digital signature (DSC) will be required to sign the form via email. iii. Send scanned images by e-sign: Aadhaar is also required for this option but you will need to upload scanned images, signatures, and other documents. Only OTP will verify the application form.
  • Then, you have to choose whether you need a real PAN card or an e-PAN card. If you choose an e-PAN card, you must provide a valid email id. The email id provided will receive a digitally signed e-PAN card.
  • Next, fill in the details on the “Contact Details” and “Documents Details” page and submit the request.
  • You will be directed to the payment page and once the payment has been made an acknowledgment will be made.
  • You can check the status of your duplicate PAN card using the generated 15-digit acknowledgment number.
  • A duplicate PAN card will be sent within 2 weeks after the department received the request.

Now Let’s see how it is done offline

  • Download and print the form “Application for a new PAN card and/or changes or PAN Data Correction”.
  • Use VIMBI characters and Empty Ink to complete the application.
  • Mention your 10-digit PAN for reference.
  • If you are a single applicant, 2 passport size photographs must be carefully attached and signed. The face should not be covered while you sign.
  • Then, fill in all the required details on the form and sign the appropriate boxes.
  • The application and payment, proof of identity, address proof, and proof of PAN must be sent to the NSDL help center. Upon receipt of payment, a printed consent form is produced with 15 digits.
  • The Help Center then sends your application to the PAN Tax Services Services Unit for further action.
  • You can check the status of your duplicate PAN card using the generated 15-digit acknowledgment number.
  • A duplicate PAN card will be sent 2 weeks after the department received the request.

When do you need to apply for a duplicate PAN card

A duplicate PAN card can be used in the following situations:-

  • Loss/theft: People often carry their PAN cards in their wallets or pockets, which they may lose if their wallet is stolen. It is a common reason to file multiple applications in the Indian department.
  • Missing location: There are many times when people leave a card somewhere and are not sure where to keep it.
  • Disadvantages: Re-printing the PAN card is the only solution for any type of damage to an existing PAN card. d. Information changes: The information and signature entered during the PAN application may change with time. In this case, we have only one solution left, namely to replace and re-print the card with the modified information.
